The new joint-venture company, SF Fiber Trading whose mission is to develop a sustainable viscose supply chain ecosystem that drives the use of viscose, delivered a joint presentation with China’s biggest viscose fiber supplier, Sateri, in late January.

“The purpose of the presentation is to educate our business partners about viscose,” said Carmen Chau, CCO Fung Group – and leading the SF Fiber initiative, “most people have a misconception that viscose is a synthetic fiber instead of natural fiber, and as more customers are looking for sustainable raw materials, we do think viscose is one of the best options.”

Over 40 attendees with different functional background of merchandising, design, fabric, and sustainability attended the workshop.

Johnny Yong, the Director of Product of SF Fiber, shared his views on viscose with the group. “Viscose is the fastest growing fibers among all types of fiber, it is normally perceived as feminine due to its drapiness characteristic – however, it actually has been used widely from inner to outer and from high street to luxury brands.”

Another speaker, Umar Faruk Chowdhury, senior manager of Sustainability & Downstream Development at Sateri, explained the difference of “open loop” and “closed loop” cellulose processes and how sustainable viscose is. “The key for sustainable viscose is the wood source and most retail customers have much concern on whether the fibers are made from deforestation and endangered species,” he said, “over 90% of Sateri’s woods are from certified sources which is far ahead compared to any suppliers in the world.” Umar also introduced the common forestry certifications and standards FSC, PEFC and Canopy Style to the group.

The SF Fiber Team prepared a small showcase to demonstrate the versatility of fabric products made from 100% viscose or blended viscose, and are planning to roll this out to more Li & Fung teams and offices in the future.

“We hope Li & Fung partners will be the advocators of viscose to their customers,” said Carmen, “our vision is to be the sole destination of sustainable viscose fibers and innovation for all the brands and retailers globally.”
